Working Group of Field Crop Extension Entomologists in the North-Central States

Relatively early in 2008, we received word that the North Central IPM Center has accepted our proposal for a North Central (field crops) Extension Entomologists Working Group. Members of the group are entomologists with extension responsibilities in all of the north-central states--Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. The funding provided for the working group will enable us to initiate some organized activities that should benefit IPM programs throughout the region. One activity will be a series of teleconferences intended for brief insect situation updates and focused discussions about regionwide insect management issues. We intend to develop consensus statements and recommendations to address some of the most critical insect management issues. Look for output from the working group in articles in state newsletters throughout the growing season. We also intend to develop a Web site publication that will serve as a clearinghouse of field crop insect management information for the Midwest. Stay tuned for future developments.--Kevin Steffey
