Distance Diagnostic Pilot Project

October 4, 1999
Since late July, over 400 Extension clients in 12 Illinois counties have received diagnoses of their plant and pest problems via a new system. Using digital cameras and microscopes, county Extension staff take high-quality digital pictures of a pest or problem. Then the images are sent, along with background information about the problem, over the Internet to an Extension Educator that specializes in the relevant area. The educator then makes a diagnosis, which is transmitted back to the local Extension office electronically. Most diagnoses are made within 48 hours.

Some samples will still need to be sent to the Plant Clinic, but many can be accurately diagnosed using this new technology. Watch for further information about how this project may be expanded to a county office near you.--Dennis Bowman
