Issue No. 10/May 30, 2008
Insect Issues During This Period of Slow Crop Growth and Development
Commentary is provided on black cutworm, noninsect soil creatures, European corn borer, bean leaf beetle, and alfalfa weevil. Producers are encouraged not to let impatience trigger haste in insect control decisions.
Loose Smut of Wheat Observed in Illinois
Wheat heads affected by loose smut have been found in southern and central Illinois. If the disease is observed in your field, do not keep the seed for planting.
When Is the "Last Day" to Plant?
A recurring question for this slowest crop-growing season in years is how late corn and soybean can be planted and still "produce a crop."
Reports are provided this issue for east-central, northern, southern, and west-central Illinois.
