Corn Rootworm Larval Hatch Confirmed

Entomologists at Purdue University have confirmed the hatch of corn rootworm larvae near Lafayette, Indiana. On May 23, a second instar corn rootworm grub was found on V3 stage corn. They suggested that hatch most likely occurred at least 5 days earlier (May 18). This year's hatch is 1 to 2 weeks earlier than occurred last year. The hatch will continue for several weeks, through early June. The dry weather and soil conditions in many areas of Illinois will favor good to excellent survival of corn rootworms this year. If you experience excessive corn rootworm injury in fields this summer, please share your observations with us.--Mike Gray
