Fall 2006 Courses in the Off-Campus Graduate Studies Program
People involved in agriculture and horticulture might be interested in two courses to be offered in the Off-Campus Graduate Studies program during the upcoming fall semester. The Department of Crop Sciences will offer CPSC 479, Insect Pest Management, via two-way video at four locations--Champaign, Mt. Vernon, Oak Brook, and Springfield. The content will include fundamentals of entomology and management of insects in turf, ornamentals, trees and shrubs, fruit and vegetable crops, and field crops. Classes will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 9:45 p.m., August 23 through December 6 (no class on November 22 during fall break). Instructors will be Drs. Kevin Steffey, Rick Weinzierl, and Phil Nixon. The course is offered for 4 undergraduate hours, 4 graduate hours, and/or 30 CEUs in IPM for Certified Crop Advisers (CCAs). The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences will offer (jointly with Crop Sciences and Agricultural Education) NRES 488, Soil Fertility and Fertilizers, online, delivered via Elluminate interactive course management system. The course will provide a general overview of basic soil fertility as it relates to soil characteristics, soil-plant relationships, and nutrient form and reaction in the soil. Classes will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 9:45 p.m., August 22 through December 5 (no class on November 21). The instructor will be Dr. Howard Brown. The course is offered for 3 undergraduate hours, 3 graduate hours, and/or 30 CEUs for CCAs (20 in Nutrient Management, 4 in Soil and Water Management, 6 in Crop Management).
